We promote the playing of the recorder among amateurs and professionals, and also encourage the playing of all early instruments such as viols, capped and open reeds, historical flute, lute and harpsichord.

February Meeting: Concentrating on One Piece

DATE: Sunday, February 19, 2011
TIME: 2:00 - 4:30 p.m.
PLACE: Unity Church of Denver, 3021 South University Blvd., Denver
CONDUCTOR: Mark Davenport

In our typical programs we are used to having a variety of music. Sometimes there is even more music than we can cover in our two hours of playing. Today we experience a different point of view. Dr. Davenport will guide us into exploring a piece in depth. He has chosen one of his favorites, Gombert’s highly lyrical Dezilde al cauellero, for our close study. It is not difficult to find the right notes in this piece, but the depth of it provides a different sort of experience. Here is Mark’s description:

For my "Concentration on One Piece" we're going to take a look at my edition of Dezilde al cauellero by Nicolas Gombert (ca. 1495 - ca. 1556). Gombert is truly a cosmopolitan composer who, as master of choirboys in the chapel of Emperor Charles V, traveled extensively as an official member of court. Gombert is known to have worked in such cities as Vienna, Brussels, and Madrid. Perhaps it was during his travels in Spain that Gombert was inspired to compose the beautiful villancico Dezilde al cauellero. The source for this edition is a large collection of pieces titled Villancicos de diversos autores..., published in Venice (1556), by Girolamo Scotto. Actually, the piece appears to have the distinction of being the only Spanish song written by Gombert (among more than 70 French chansons found in his complete works). Yet, Gombert's lone example stands as one of the most aesthetically engaging of the genre.

After playing through my modern edition of the piece, we'll then try reading through copies of the original partbooks from 1556, in original notation.

There are still copies in stock available of this edition on the Landmark Press website for $12. Free shipping… mention the Denver Chapter workshop in the "Special Instructions" and get 20% discount.

Erin and Gavin Johnson have started a new group. We currently have a trio and would like to add another player or two for playing Early Music up thru Baroque. Group overall is playing at advanced beginner - intermediate level with a lot of musical background. We have Sn, Sp, A & T recorders, oiano, organ, simple hand percussion, and harp players in the group. We usually play Tuesday or Wednesday night at 7:00 pm in Westminster. We sometimes perform at Westminster Christian Church, during regular church services. We would like to perform something more substantial, maybe at a recital or holiday function, should the opportunity present itself. We meet at my home currently, but if the group gets bigger we have access to the church. Contact: gavinj7000@yahoo.com.

Great bass Recorder for sale

Selling my mollenhauer denner great bass recorder. Got this as a backup to my main instrument (Kung greatbass) and it's hardly been used - just at home and rarely played. Selling for $2400 to finance purchase of another instrument. The denner greatbasses are selling for $3250.00 at Lazar's so my asking price should make for a good deal. If you know of anyone in the Denver Recorder Society who may be interested, feel free to give them my contact info. Also, thought I'd mention that I'd be interested in possible sales/ exchanges involving an English horn, alto or contra alto clarinet. Paul Mimlitsch <pmimlitsch@mac.com>

Baroque Flute Traverso For Sale

Roderick Cameron "Rottenburgh" baroque flute traverso. Ebony with natural ivory rings and sterling D# 2 middle joints: A415, A440. (Head joint has a repaired crack which has been completely stable for many years.) $400. Includes Cavallaro soft roll cover and the wonderful Margaret Neuhaus book with comprehensive fingering chart. (The ivory for the rings was acquired perfectly legally. It is recycled material that was in the USA prior to current restrictions. I specifically asked about the legality at the time of ordering the flute.) For someone who wants to experiment with a traverso, it is a perfect entry point. It will give a sense of what playing on a really good wooden instrument with a nice scale and beautiful tone is like without paying more than you would for most beginner-level traversos. The Denver Recorder Chapter (that’s us!) had a rousing good time in our Jan 15th meeting Sunday. It was the turn for shape note music. We had high attendance of friends and members and a gathering of robust singers showing and telling us how to read the shape notes. There were at least twelve such visitors, and they sang with such vibrant enthusiasm that we quickly caught on with their sink-or-swim method of teaching.

The well planned, well prepared program was put together by our own Rebecca Beshore and her friend Erik Mason who is active on the shape note scene of our area.

A best surprise for the likes of me: the celebration of measures. I’m accustomed to not having measures at all in Renaissance music. But these “American baroque” shape note singers bend the other way. They confidently mark each measure with a sweep of the right arm through full range of motion. With that much activity resounding in the room, you can’t just sit around. You have to jump in!

Four people attended February’s Newbie session led by Rosemary Glista. They had a wonderful time playing 16h century European and Mexican music. One wonderful advantage of playing the recorder is that you don’t have to know a lot of notes to play some lovely music.

The Newbie Group gives newer players an opportunity to play small ensemble music in a safe setting. Session is free of charge and open to the public. Drop-ins welcome. Newbies generally know some fingerings and have at least minimal skill at reading music. You may also wish to attend if you are new to our chapter but already play the recorder. All voices of recorder are welcome. A chapter member volunteer will direct the playing session. Attendees will have the option of observing or participating in the monthly meeting, which follows at 2:00 – 4:30 at the same location. For more information, contact Dick Munz at dickmunz@gmail.com or call 303-286-7909. See the related article in this newsletter for information about the upcoming January meeting.

StopTime had only one appearance in January, at the Colorado Springs Salon honoring Dick Wood. We performed his "When I'm Sixty-Four". That seemed appropriate because StopTime collaborated with Dick to license his arrangement for our use in public. Our next performance will be our annual concert at the Mercury Cafe February 18th. Put that on your calendar; we hope to see you there.

Fipple Jive participants continue in their quest for self expression. The advanced group meets on Tuesday nights and works on exercises leading to spontaneous improvisation. If you would like to expand your skill set, contact Dick Munz, dickmunz@gmail.com or 303-286-7909.
